در کتاب مسئله بودن و نبودن، یالوم و همسرش مشترکاً از چالشهای عمیق جدیدی در زندگیشان پرده بر میدارند: ماریلین از چگونه آسوده مردن میگوید و یالوم از سوگواری و زندگی بدون ماریلین مینویسد.
اروین د. یالوم روانپزشک اگزیستانسیال آمریکایی است. او استاد بازنشسته روانپزشکی در دانشگاه استنفورد و همچنین نویسنده روایتهای واقعی و تخیلی داستانی و آثار فلسفی و روانشناسانه است.
او متولد ۱۳ ژوئن ۱۹۳۱ در واشنگتن دی سی بود. خانواده او تقریبا ۱۵ سال پیش از تولد او از روسیه (روستایی به نام سلتز در نزدیکی مرز لهستان) به آمریکا آمده بودند و برای گذران زندگی مغازه خواروبارفروشی دست و پا کرده بودند و در طبقه بالای آن هم زندگی میکردند. خانواده او از آن دسته خانوادههای اهل کتاب نبودند اما خواندن کتاب برای اروین یالوم کم سن و سال پناه بود. او هفتهای دوبار به کتابخانه مرکزی محله خود میرفت و کتابهایی درباره زندگینامه افراد یا ادبیات داستانی میخواند. در طول زمان او متوجه شد رمان نوشتن را دوست دارد.
یالوم تحصیلات خود را در رشته پزشکی و روانپزشکی در دانشگاه جورج واشنگتن و دانشگاه بوستون ادامه داد و در سال ۱۹۶۳ پس از دو سال سربازی در بیمارستان مانت ساینای هونولولو، استاد داشنگاه استنفورد شد.
یالوم در سال ۱۹۷۴ جایزه ادوارد استرکر را برای کمک به بیماران روانپزشکی و در سال ۲۰۰۱ نیز جایزه انجمن روانشناسی آمریکا (APA) با عنوان ادوارد فیتسر دریافت کرد.
در سال ۲۰۰۳ با تعدادی از روانشناسان، انسانشناسان و فیلسوفها درباره ترس از مرگ در مستند «پرواز از مرگ» مصاحبه کردند؛ اروین یالوم یکی از این افراد بود که از نگاه منحصر به فرد خود در این باره سخن میگوید.
در سال ۲۰۱۴ نیز فیلمی با نام درمان یالوم (Yalom’s Cure) براساس زندگی اروین د. یالوم ساخته شد.
